Abstract

1 Corinthians chapters 1 and 2 reflect Paul's critical attitude towards the dominant use of Greek rhetoric in the communication culture of Corinthian society. The background of this study is the socio-rhetorical context of the city of Corinth, where eloquence was a measure of authority and wisdom. This study aims to examine the theological and pastoral reasons behind Paul's reluctance to use a rhetorical style that emphasises human eloquence. The method used is a historical-critical exegetical approach to 1 Corinthians 1–2, exploring the cultural context, argumentative structure, and theology of the cross in the text. The analysis reveals that Paul consciously rejects worldly rhetorical approaches in order to emphasise the power of Christ's cross as the centre of his preaching. This stance aims to affirm that the faith of the congregation does not depend on human wisdom but on the power of God. The conclusion of this study is that Paul prioritises preaching based on the power of the Spirit, not rhetoric, as a form of faithfulness to the Gospel and a pastoral strategy in building a humble community rooted in the cross of Christ.
